2. Unfulfilled Freedom

Through my exploration of protection, I stumbled upon the importance of balancing “overprotection”. I resonate with the concept of being free to go anywhere yet still holding onto some sort of instinctual “cage”. The pigeons depicted are my grandfather’s pets. I always felt sadness for the birds as they are free to fly anywhere, yet they are forever tethered to the same cage that my grandpa opened for them.

In the teenage experience, there is an interesting interaction between responsibility, freedom, and limitations. In my adolescence, there were unspoken restrictions so I allowed this piece to embody my potential freedom that is left unfulfilled. The cage-like background with the sky border painted with an expressive palette knife demonstrated this strange interaction between the trapped birds and their potential for independence. The 3-D extension of the cage structure provides shade and cover for the birds, but it also serves as a limitation and a roof that holds them in place.
